18 Jul The best time of the year for flats fishing in south Florida
Summer time Flyfishing
Summer time is here and there is not a better time for Fly and flats fishing in South Florida and the keys. July, August and September offer the most consistent window for almost all the flats species we target year long.
You can expect killer permit fishing from Miami to key west, great bonefishing, lots of baby tarpon, great snook action in the beaches and creeks of flamingo, good redfish and shark fishing. The options are endless. Let’s face it, the weather gets extremely hot but the fishing also does.
Permit fishing in islamorada and Biscayne bay has been excellent along with bonefish and baby tarpon. We have been seeing lots of small bonefish from Key Biscayne all the way down to the middle keys, which is a great sign for the future of our fishery.
Late afternoon fun
Fishing for tailing bones is a great thing to do this time of the year, specially early in the morning and late in the afternoon, while the water remains cool. The fishing can be fast and furious a couple of hours before dark, after the typical summer time rain showers.
For these late afternoon trips, I like to get on the water about 4:00pm and fish all the way to sunset. Late afternoon fishing for tailing bones and permit in the summer can be absolutely awesome.
Summer time Flyfishing for the slam
Summer is also the best time of the year to try your luck at a grand slam. Tarpon are very active in the morning hours and bones and permit can be found through the day. Whether is fly or spinning tackle, the odds of catching a tarpon, bonefish and permit in the same day are the best this time of the year.
