Summer Time Fishing Bonanza
It is summer time fishing bonanza in the keys! The hottest time of the year is here and hungry fish await for your lures and flies. I often get the same questions from clients: when is the fishing best? The Everglades? Biscayne bay? Islamorada and Key largo? What about the lower keys from big pine down to key west? What’s your favorite time of the year? My answer to all those questions is often quite short: Summer time.
Too hot?
What’s ironic is that the summer is usually slow time for fishing guides in Florida. I’d say the heat is the main reason as most people leave Florida fleeing the hot summer temperatures. Kids are off of school and people go on family vacations. Lots of folks really enjoy staying up north in their neck of the woods for the summer so they don’t bother coming down.
Those are some of the reasons why we don’t get a strong influx of fisherman during July, August and September.
Now, how serious you are about fishing? Are you the hardcore type of fisherman looking for the very best window for overall fishing? If the answer is yes, You really should come down here for the summer.
The Hotter the better
As many of you know (those that have fished the flats in Florida before) it is almost always windy here. Summer time is the only time of the year in which we get several days or weeks of back to back calm predictable weather. Only exception are the afternoon thunderstorms and showers but usually, once these come through, the wind lays down, the water cools off and those tailing and rolling fish really start putting on a show!!
Grand slam time
Have you ever wanted to have a shot at catching a flats grand slam? If so, you need to come down in the summer, period. Summer time offers the best window for catching a permit, bonefish and tarpon the same day as well as a Tarpon, redfish, snook and trout in the Everglades.
Do you enjoy baby to mid-size tarpon fishing? Many will say “spring time or tarpon season” but I tell you, no other months are better for those juvenile poons than July, August and September. take note all you flyfishing junkies out there!.
Summer time advantages
Any more advantages of fishing in the Summer time ? Yes, solitude, and that one is big! If you’re the guy that hates fishing around other boats, weekenders, jet skies, the summer time months are for you.
Most people are gone by mid June after all the tarpon craziness, seasonal fishing guides leave Florida as well as all the snowbirds. The results are miles and miles of empty water and unmolested fish, all to yourself. You will only see locals taking advantage of the great fishing.
Is it hot and humid? Yes it is. In fact, the hotter the weather the better the fishing!! If you don’t mind the heat you can really experience the best fishing we have to offer for just about any species that inhabit the flats down here.
Give me a call and let me show you some great fishing this summer!
